At St John’s we believe that RE should be exciting, creative and relevant enabling all children to deepen their thinking and understanding in an atmosphere of love and respect. RE gives a safe space in which children can critically reflect on their own spiritual convictions. RE is taught in accordance with the [LA] Agreed Syllabus for RE and scheme of work. Alongside Christianity children study other major religions including Islam and Judaism. We aim that RE is not a bolt on, but that it is embedded in the whole school vision of raising standards. There is a strong faith dimension which underpins everything the school is working towards.
RE follows the Locally agreed Awareness, Mystery and Value syllabus for North Somerset. We use the resource ‘Understanding Christianity’ to cover all the Christian content of the curriculum and Awareness, Mystery and Value for the other world faiths – Judaism, Islam and Buddhism.
RE reflects the Church of England Vision for Education, Serving the Common Good and Statement of Entitlement developing religious literacy.
Parents/carers are able to withdraw their child from RE or collective worship but should discuss this with the Head teacher.
